Overview
Changes downstream matter. Equipment, chemicals or operating conditions can alter the contamination risk even when the incoming connection remains unchanged. Review the intended use before treating an existing device as suitable protection for a new application.
What the work can include
The scope can include reviewing system arrangements, identifying protection requirements, coordinating water-company notification and consent, and arranging installation, testing or repair. The particular device, connected equipment and responsibility for ongoing testing are named in the instruction.
Outputs include the assessment basis, relevant consent information, equipment references, commissioning or compliance-test records and follow-up actions. The maintenance programme needs the actual due date and report destination, so a test does not become an isolated visit with no continuing owner.
RPZ protection and its limits
An RPZ, or reduced pressure zone valve, is a mechanical backflow device. Water Regs UK identifies protection against back pressure and back siphonage for risks up to fluid category 4. It is not category 5 protection. Read the current RPZ guidance.
The correct arrangement follows the assessed risk and the water undertaker's requirements. Point-of-use protection and wider site protection are different decisions. The design also needs to consider operation, maintenance access and any effect on the supplied equipment, rather than selecting a device from pipe size alone.
Assessment and preparation
Provide drawings, details of the connected process, existing valve information and correspondence from the water company. Include previous test reports, repair history and the condition of consent where available. Identify any alterations since the last assessment or test.
Confirm the supply boundary, isolation arrangements and the activity affected by an interruption. Access for the competent tester and the practical installation conditions need to be established. Agree who handles notification, receives reports and arranges action if the device does not meet its required test criteria.
How the work proceeds
We establish the water-system use and protection question, review existing records and coordinate the appropriate assessment and technical work. Installation or alteration follows the relevant consent and installation requirements, with commissioning and compliance testing arranged through a competent RPZ tester.
The handover records the device, test outcome and any remedial or follow-up requirement. Water Regs UK states that test intervals are set by the local water undertaker and are at least annual. The programme records the actual required date and submission arrangements rather than assuming every valve has identical conditions.
Cost, timing and disruption
Assessment complexity, device size, access, pipework alterations and test or repair requirements affect cost. A straightforward compliance test differs from resolving a missing consent record, correcting an unsuitable installation or changing the protection arrangement for a new process.
Allow time for water-company coordination where required and plan the interruption with the affected users. Spare parts, additional testing and reinstatement need clear inclusion. A quotation should explain whether the task is a test, repair, installation or wider design assessment so approvals match the actual work.

Frequently asked questions
Can an RPZ valve protect against fluid category 5 risks?
No. Its stated protection extends up to category 4. The assessment must identify a suitable arrangement for higher-risk applications rather than treating an RPZ as universal protection.
Is a valve installation enough without ongoing testing?
No. RPZ arrangements include commissioning and compliance testing, with continuing tests under the water undertaker's conditions. Keep those requirements in the maintenance programme.
Can a changed process keep the same protection automatically?
The new use needs assessment. A changed downstream risk can affect the required protection even if the pipe and existing valve are unchanged.
What if an RPZ test identifies a failure?
The competent tester's findings and required action must reach the responsible person. Arrange the appropriate repair, verification and water-company communication under the applicable requirements.
