Overview
Before adjusting the system, establish whether it is functioning correctly. Obstructed filters, damaged equipment, control faults or missing design information may need attention first. Balancing cannot compensate for every defect or an unsuitable system design.
What the work can include
The scope can include reviewing design information, inspecting the relevant air paths, measuring flows at agreed points and adjusting suitable controls or dampers. Supply and extract systems are identified separately, with the operating conditions required for the exercise.
Deliverables include locations, target and measured values, settings changed and unresolved limitations. The report should state whether results meet the agreed basis and identify areas needing repair, design review or further access.
Important decisions

Targets or assumptions. Use the relevant design or a competent assessment to establish the required values. Do not create targets simply by averaging existing readings.
Whole system or selected areas. Changes to one branch can affect others. Agree the boundary and the checks needed beyond the room where the original complaint arose.
Assessment and preparation
Provide ventilation drawings, design values, commissioning records and information about subsequent alterations. Include room uses, occupancy patterns and the conditions under which complaints arise.
Identify building-management settings and the contacts able to establish the agreed operating mode. The assessment needs access to relevant terminals, ducts and plant. Any excluded points or unstable operating conditions should be resolved or recorded before the results are treated as a system baseline.
How the work proceeds
We confirm the system boundary and target basis, check readiness and establish the operating conditions. Measurements inform controlled adjustments, followed by remeasurement of the relevant points and connected areas.
The final report links results to locations and operating mode. Unresolved plant faults or access limits remain visible. Settings and records return to the responsible team so later control changes do not unknowingly invalidate the assessed arrangement.
Cost, timing and disruption
System extent, number of terminals, access, available design data and the stability of operating conditions affect cost. Repeated visits may be needed if essential controls or rooms are unavailable at the agreed test time.
Plan balancing after relevant installation and repairs are ready. Allow for verification and recording, rather than treating it as a quick final adjustment at the end of a project with no access time remaining.

Can balancing fix a broken fan or blocked filter?
No. Those defects need the appropriate repair or maintenance. Balancing should use a system ready for the agreed assessment.
Can a room's airflow be increased without checking elsewhere?
A change can affect connected branches. The scope should establish the wider measurements needed to understand and verify the adjustment.
What if there are no design airflow values?
The required basis needs to be established by appropriate technical assessment. Existing readings alone do not define what the system should achieve.
Does a balancing report prove air quality in every circumstance?
No. It records defined measurements and operating conditions. Occupancy, sources of contaminants and later changes require their own assessment.
