UPS and Uninterruptible Power Supplies

UPS work is relevant when a short power interruption causes loss of data, disrupted equipment or an unacceptable stop in a process. It can also be needed when connected loads increase, batteries show reduced performance or an existing installation lacks a clear maintenance and bypass arrangement.

Overview

Begin by identifying which devices need support and what should happen during an outage. Equipment that can shut down safely after a short period has different needs from equipment expected to continue until another power source is available.

What the work can include

The scope can include load and runtime assessment, review of an existing UPS, unit or battery replacement, associated electrical work and the configuration of agreed monitoring or shutdown interfaces. Larger systems may need specialist installation and commissioning arrangements.

Outputs identify supported equipment, capacity and runtime assumptions, relevant test results and maintenance requirements. Access for future battery replacement and any bypass provision are considered alongside initial installation. Disposal of replaced equipment and batteries should be included explicitly in the work package.

Important decisions

Capacity and runtime. Capacity determines the load the UPS can support; battery provision influences how long it can support that load. These are different decisions. Eaton explains this distinction in its UPS technical FAQ.

Operating arrangement. UPS designs handle normal supply and transfer differently. Select the topology and operating mode for the equipment requirement rather than assuming every unit provides the same protection.

Generator and bypass interfaces. A generator and UPS need compatibility assessment. Bypass can support maintenance in a designed arrangement, but the level of protection available while bypassed must be understood. Eaton's generator guidance explains relevant interactions.

Assessment and preparation

Provide the connected equipment list, power information, required support time and any shutdown sequence. Include existing UPS and battery details, alarms, service history and available installation records.

Site assessment considers the electrical supply, connection method, space, ventilation and access for maintenance. Identify who controls connected IT or operational equipment and who can approve a test interruption. Adding equipment later should trigger a review of the agreed load and runtime basis.

How the work proceeds

We establish the continuity objective and load, assess the existing arrangement and define the unit, battery and electrical work required. Interfaces with IT, controls or generator systems are assigned to the appropriate responsible parties.

Installation or replacement is planned around supported equipment and an agreed outage or bypass arrangement. Verification covers the defined operating and shutdown functions, with any load-test limitations recorded. Handover identifies the supported scope, settings changed through the authorised process, operating information and the next maintenance actions.

Cost, timing and disruption

Load capacity, required runtime, battery arrangement, connection work, monitoring interfaces and maintenance access affect cost. A higher-capacity unit and additional battery provision solve different requirements, so proposals should state both clearly.

Time may be needed for load assessment, equipment supply and coordination with users of the protected systems. Battery or UPS replacement can itself create a period of reduced protection; the work plan identifies that exposure and the agreed operating arrangement.

For offices, IT shutdown responsibilities need to be coordinated with electrical work. In critical environments, redundancy and maintenance arrangements require a defined design brief. Industrial sites may need to distinguish control-system support from larger process loads.

Frequently asked questions

Does a larger battery let the UPS power more equipment?

Additional compatible batteries can extend runtime; they do not automatically increase the unit's load capacity. Both values need checking for the proposed arrangement.

Will a UPS run the equipment indefinitely?

No. Available runtime depends on the system and load. Define whether it supports a short interruption, generator transfer or controlled shutdown.

Can an existing generator be used with the UPS?

The combination needs assessment. Generator characteristics, UPS design and the combined load affect compatibility; matching nominal ratings alone is insufficient.

Can the UPS be serviced without interrupting the load?

That depends on its designed maintenance and bypass arrangement. Establish the work method and the protection available during maintenance before committing to an uninterrupted service window.
