Overview
An existing circuit's presence does not establish spare capacity or suitability for a new load. Equipment specifications and the installation condition need assessment before a connection method is selected. This is particularly important where several projects are adding demand to the same distribution system.
What the work can include
The scope includes the agreed design and installation of circuits, distribution changes, equipment connections, containment, accessories and controls interfaces. It identifies the existing installation boundary, technical checks, completion documents and making good required.
Specialist equipment can have requirements beyond a power connection. Clarify who supplies isolators, control wiring, commissioning support and final equipment acceptance. Where another contractor owns part of the system, define the handover between packages before installation begins.
Capacity, layout and future use
Provide the actual load and operating information for new equipment. A name or broad description is not always enough to design its supply. Consider starting behaviour, operating patterns and the other loads served by the installation when defining the technical brief.
Wiring routes also need practical judgement. Access for maintenance, protection from damage, fire-related building interfaces and changes to occupied areas affect the route. Allow for known future requirements where justified, but distinguish confirmed needs from assumptions so the client can assess cost and scope clearly.
Assessment and preparation
Supply drawings, circuit schedules, previous certificates or reports and the proposed equipment specifications. Identify ownership of incoming supplies and existing systems. Where records are incomplete, the assessment needs enough investigation to establish the installation on which the design will rely.
Agree access to distribution equipment, ceiling or floor voids and working areas. Tell us about hazardous areas, permit arrangements and operational restrictions. The client's brief should identify who approves the layout, shutdown and handback, including other service specialists affected by the work.
How the installation proceeds
We establish the required outcome, assess the existing arrangements and define the installation scope. The programme coordinates procurement, access, containment and cable routes with other trades. Changes discovered during installation are recorded and assessed before the instruction is revised.
Inspection and testing appropriate to the work form part of completion. Handover includes the relevant installation documentation, updated identification and agreed operating information. Outstanding work remains clearly recorded so equipment is not handed over on the assumption that all interfaces have been completed.
Cost, timing and disruption
The number of circuits, load requirements, route lengths, containment, existing condition and specialist interfaces affect cost. Work in finished occupied areas needs different preparation from installation during an open refurbishment. Supply upgrades or third-party dependencies can affect timing beyond the installation itself.
Plan isolation and return to service around critical loads. An out-of-hours window must accommodate preparation and testing as well as wiring. Explain which areas will be unavailable and how dependent services will be managed so the operational impact is understood before the programme is agreed.

FAQs
Can new equipment use an existing electrical circuit?
Only after its requirements and the existing circuit's suitability have been assessed. Provide equipment information before choosing the connection or assuming capacity is available.
Is installation certification the same as an EICR?
No. Installation documentation records the defined new work or alteration. An EICR assesses the condition of an existing installation within an agreed inspection scope. Specify the document and purpose required.
Can cable routes be coordinated with refurbishment work?
Yes. Agree layouts and interfaces early so containment and wiring can be installed before finishes close access. Include making good and fire-related interfaces in the coordinated scope.
What if additional defects are found in the existing installation?
The finding is recorded and its effect on the proposed work explained. Any necessary additional assessment or repair follows a defined instruction rather than being hidden in the new installation record.
