Monitoring does not replace an inspection where physical examination or testing is required. HSE's inspection guidance explains that inspection scope follows the equipment and risk. A normal remote reading cannot establish the condition of parts the monitoring does not observe.
Priorities and response arrangements
We agree what generates an alert, when it is reviewed and who receives it. The scope distinguishes data collection, notification, technical assessment and attendance. Loss of data needs its own action rather than being interpreted as a normal condition.

Record the sensor or observation point, asset, timestamp, units and relevant operating state. Retain gaps, changes to thresholds and equipment alterations. We agree data access, retention and usable exports so information can transfer at the end of the arrangement.
What affects scope and cost
Device suitability, installation, data connectivity, review frequency, specialist interpretation and site verification affect cost. Any ongoing licence, communication or subscription requirement is identified before commitment, together with responsibility for maintaining the devices.
Completion and follow-up
For setup, handover confirms the points monitored, data route, review rules and contact arrangements. Ongoing reports identify exceptions and actions. When monitoring ends, agree data export, device ownership and removal of authorised access through the client's process.

Frequently asked questions
Does remote monitoring mean someone watches continuously?
No. Collection, review hours and notification arrangements are defined in the service. Continuous data collection and continuous human monitoring are different provisions.
Does an alert automatically send an engineer?
Only if the agreement defines that response and authority. Otherwise the alert follows the agreed review and instruction route.
What happens if the connection fails?
The arrangement should identify missing data, its significance and the recovery action. The last normal reading is not evidence that current conditions remain normal.
Can monitoring replace a site inspection?
Only where the relevant task and method allow it. Many defects and required inspections need physical assessment; monitoring covers the conditions its devices or observations can actually detect.
