How Often Should Water Temperatures Be Checked?
For a non-circulating hot-water system, HSE identifies monthly temperature checks at sentinel points, including relevant nearest, furthest and long-branch outlets. For circulating systems, principal return loops have monthly checks, with other loops and representative locations included under their own programme.

Calorifier flow and return temperatures also have monthly checks in the guidance. Cold-water storage and incoming supply checks need their specified schedule, alongside representative outlet checks. Record those tasks separately rather than treating one outlet measurement as evidence about all stored and distributed water.
Use the right measurement point
A sentinel point represents a relevant part of the system; it is not simply whichever outlet is easiest to reach. Use the schematic and actual distribution arrangement to establish the points and keep their references consistent.
A thermostatic mixing valve blends water to reduce scalding risk. Its mixed outlet temperature does not establish the upstream hot-water distribution temperature. The monitoring method must address the appropriate supply location while preserving the required scald protection.
HSE's hot and cold water guidance explains the temperature-control basis: hot storage at least 60°C, hot distribution reaching 50°C within one minute at outlets, or 55°C in healthcare premises, and cold water maintained below 20°C where possible. These are control-system values, not instructions to deliver scalding water to users or change valve settings without assessment.
Review after changes and failures
Refurbishment, new outlets, altered operating hours and low occupancy can change the programme. Update the monitoring points and tasks when the system changes. Follow the agreed response to a failed result and retain evidence of corrective work and subsequent checks.
Frequently asked questions
Does every tap need a monthly reading?
No. The programme identifies sentinel and representative points and other system checks. The selection must provide useful coverage of the actual installation.
Can an automated sensor replace all manual work?
Only where the monitoring arrangement is properly specified and verified for its purpose. Sensors do not remove inspection, maintenance or action on failures, and their location matters.
What if a temperature check cannot be completed?
Record the reason and arrange the appropriate follow-up. A locked room or inaccessible point should remain an open task rather than being marked satisfactory.
